River Oaks Community Education and Development Corporation (ROC ED), a key member of Cook County’s Digital Equity Action Committee, is using cutting-edge augmented reality (AR) technology to connect digital inclusion with local history. Through its new immersive storytelling project, ROC ED is developing AR/VR experiences centered on the 30 Underground Railroad sites located across Cook County. This innovative initiative builds digital confidence while honoring the legacy of freedom seekers in the region.

Targeting residents of all ages—especially those in underserved Southland communities—this project makes emerging technology accessible by pairing history education with digital literacy training. Participants will virtually explore historic sites, hear narratives voiced by local storytellers and musicians, and experience reconstructions created with AI technology to accommodate diverse learning needs and abilities. Workshops, community events, and mobile apps will deepen engagement and provide tools for lifelong learning.

Beyond education, ROC ED is fostering sustainability and equity by repurposing donated digital devices for program use and future training. With support from local collaborators, including D-Composed and the Chicago Association of Black Storytellers, this project not only promotes historical awareness but also boosts tech access, community pride, and economic opportunity in the Southland. Through innovation, inclusion, and cultural storytelling, ROC ED is transforming the way communities learn, connect, and thrive.
